Pope Leo XIV and a Benedictine Vision for a Renewed Church

The election of Pope Leo XIV on May 8, 2025, marked a historic moment for the Catholic Church. Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, he became the first American to ascend to the papacy, taking the name Leo XIV. His election signifies a continuation of the progressive trajectory established by his predecessor, Pope Francis, with a focus on social justice and inclusion of marginalized communities.

Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral journey is deeply rooted in his missionary work in Peru, where he served as bishop of Chiclayo and later as apostolic administrator of Callao. His experiences in South America have profoundly influenced his commitment to social justice and advocacy for workers’ rights.

In his inaugural address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the world with the words, “Peace be with all of you! Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for God’s flock. I, too, would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families, and all people, wherever they are, all of the people, all over the earth.” He emphasized themes of unity, compassion, and dialogue, calling for a Church that builds bridges and embraces all people.

The Benedictine Sisters and Oblates of St. Paul’s Monastery here in Saint Paul, Minnesota, resonate deeply with Pope Leo XIV’s message. Our community is founded on the Rule of St. Benedict, which emphasizes values such as hospitality, stability, prayer, and transformation. These principles guide our mission to create a sanctuary of peace and spiritual nourishment for all who seek it.

Hospitality, a cornerstone of Benedictine spirituality, is exemplified in the our commitment to welcoming all guests as Christ. This ethos is reflected in our efforts to foster an ecumenical presence, building relationships with individual seekers, retreat groups, and local churches by offering sacred spaces for contemplation and community.

As the global Church continues its journey through the Jubilee of Hope this year, announced by Pope Francis, St. Paul’s Monastery aligns its mission with this call for faith, hope, and renewal. The Jubilee invites Christians to deepen their spiritual lives and rekindle trust in God’s abiding presence, themes that are integral to the Monastery’s vision for the future.

Looking ahead, St. Paul’s Monastery aspires to be a beacon of hope in an often-divided world. By embracing Benedictine values and responding to the needs of the Church and society, we aim to create sacred spaces that foster healing, reconciliation, and spiritual growth.

The election of Pope Leo XIV, with his emphasis on unity and social justice, offers renewed inspiration for communities like St. Paul’s Monastery. As we continue our mission rooted in Benedictine spirituality, we stand with the Sisters ready to contribute to a Church that embodies compassion, inclusivity, and hope for the future.
