DIRECTOR OF LITURGY & MUSIC

FLSA: Exempt
30-36 hours/week   attendance at Sunday 11:00am Eucharist and holidays

The principal duty of all employees is to assist in the mission of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Paul’s Monastery.  This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of all activities, duties or responsibilities that are required for this job.  Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

Essential Responsibilities of the Director of Liturgy and Music:

The Director of Liturgy and Music is responsible for:

  • planning and coordinating all liturgical services which celebrate and strengthen the faith journey of the Sisters of St. Benedict of St. Paul’s Monastery
  • collaborating with clergy, sacristan, ministry leaders, volunteers and musicians to complete the plan of action for monastic liturgies and music
  • developing and directing liturgical ministers and musicians who serve at liturgies (includes Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharist). Eucharist is scheduled for Sundays, feast days and solemnities
  • overseeing the operation, maintenance and repair of musical instruments and amplification system
  • participating in and providing administrative support for the Liturgy Committee
  • verifying the compensation for presiding celebrants and musicians

Duties:

  • Administers a multifaceted liturgy and music program including planning, budgeting, preparation of rituals, scheduling and timely communication with liturgical ministers
  • Knowledge of music software (i.e., Finale) and worship aid software (Publisher)
  • Schedules cantors and ensembles – for weekend and special liturgies
  • Prepares biweekly worship reference sheets for liturgies
  • Prepares periodic and special liturgical ministries schedule
  • Updates worship aids as needed
  • Serves as a musician with substitutes as available
  • Selects music for liturgical celebrations
  • Provides scripts/worship aids for special celebrations
  • Participates in and directs the liturgical music and/or liturgy for Sunday Eucharists
  • Oversees compliance with copyright laws and licensing procedures
  • Plans funeral liturgies
  • Meets periodically with the Liturgy Committee
  • Provides training to liturgical ministers as needed
  • Leads practices as needed
  • Orders liturgical supplies and oversees liturgy budget
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Liturgy or Music
  • Four years of experience as a liturgist
  • Able to play both the piano and organ
  • Able to cantor
  • Experience with liturgy in religious communities preferred
  • Understanding of Benedictine Spirituality preferred
  • Knowledge of full liturgical cycle and ability to implement Benedictine ordo instructions

Working Conditions:

  • Able to sit and preform computer work for lengthy periods of time. Frequent use of computer keyboard that requires repetitive hand and wrist movements
  • Frequent walking, standing and sitting.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Flexible work hours, some morning, midday and evening work
